Systematic and digital Production Model of Healthy Pistachio to improve the resilience of production Mountain systems

Pistachio production in Italy is an opportunity to improve the resilience of mountain production systems because it is a niche crop with high income and nutritional value, combining sustainability of agricultural territories and competitiveness of production even in marginal areas. However, the quality and food safety of pistachio is threatened by phytopathologies and fungal contamination by Aspergilli-producing mycotoxins; the latter are extremely harmful to human health.

The goal of the project is to develop a systematic, digital model to manage healthy pistachio production that is scalable and transferable to mountainous areas in the north as well. The research will focus on product quality and healthiness through the development of technical protocols for the early diagnosis and sustainable control of important plant diseases and mycotoxin-producing Aspergilli in pistachio, from cultivation to storage.

By integrating good production practices (bibliographic and digital questionnaire data analysis) with project protocols, technical specifications for digital field and storage notebooks will be defined. These tools, together with those of partner companies and the cloud platform for consulting data in real time, will constitute the ProMode digital system for managing healthy pistachio production.

A pilot action will map potentially suitable sites for pistachio cultivation in an iNEST area.

PH-ProMode, which aims to develop a systematic digital model of healthy pistachio production, falls under REGIME 2: projects that do not significantly harm the 6 environmental objectives. PH-ProMode combines sustainability of agricultural territories and competitiveness of production even in marginal mountainous areas, in line with EU Regulation No. 2020/852.

In addition to incorporating adaptation solutions that reduce the risk of adverse effects on current and future climate, it uses natural resources, sustainably sourced bio-based materials and other raw materials more efficiently in sustainable production and agricultural practices on pistachio groves in Basilicata and Sicily

During the project, in fact, ozone, an oxidizing agent with fungicidal properties, is used. It is an environmentally friendly gas because it decomposes rapidly, producing oxygen and leaving no residue in food. It has been considered a non-harmful food additive by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In addition, the biproducts used are also generally biodegradable, with no or reduced deficiency times and reduced environmental impact. They are therefore used in integrated pest management and some of them are allowed in organic farming.

The actions as a whole contribute to improving biodiversity, preventing soil and other ecosystem degradation, deforestation and habitat loss.
